EPA Brownfields Assessment Coalition Grant

Lassen County, in partnership with Susanville Indian Rancheria and the Fort Sage Unified School District, is applying for a Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant.  The goals of the Brownfields Assessment Program are to protect the environment, promote partnerships, strengthen the marketplace, and facilitate sustainable reuse of brownfields.  A brownfield site is “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, contaminants, controlled substances, petroleum or petroleum products, or is mine-scarred land.”

Lassen County will act as the grant recipient to submit an application for funding in the amount of $1,000,000 to assess sites potentially contaminated with hazardous substances and/or petroleum.  If awarded the grant, Lassen County and its coalition partners plan to utilize funding to assess Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) property and other potentially contaminated sites throughout the County.

The Lassen County Brownfields Coalition Program intends to protect the health, welfare, and environment of the population and promote economic development and diversification.  Assessment of the sites will allow the County and coalition members to evaluate perceived contamination, appropriate clean-up/mitigation measures (if required), and/or redevelopment options.  Redevelopment and economic diversification are the coalition’s top priorities, which will enable the coalition partners to address the current financial problems affecting the community.  Redevelopment and reuse of the potentially contaminated sites will increase the economic viability and sustainability of the area by enabling redevelopment and reducing or eliminating perceived risks to sensitive populations from health and environmental concerns.
